Priznanje Zelena pisarna 2010

Simpozij o kemiji nukleinskih kislin, strukturi in interakcijah

NMR center s Kemijskega inštituta organizira mednarodni simpozij z naslovom "Symposium on...

NMR center s Kemijskega inštituta organizira mednarodni simpozij z naslovom "
", od 29. - 31. maja 2010 v Novi Gorici.

.

The Slovenian team that, under the guidance of Dr Roman Jerala from the National Institute of...

The Slovenian team that, under the guidance of Dr Roman Jerala from the National Institute of Chemistry, achieved outstanding successes in the last four years at the world competition of research projects in synthetic biology (iGEM), has been nominated for this year's award in the area of biotechnology, given by the
. These awards are presented to the most important world innovators for achievements that promise to have the greatest long-term effect.

The World Technology Award is given by the World Technology Network (WTN) in association with the magazines Time, Fortune, Science/AAAS and NASDAQ, CNN and others. The WTN awards are regarded as some of the most prestigious and cover a range of areas of innovation, from the world of technology and their interdisciplinary applications to the arts. The WTN was established in 1997 by James P. Clark. Today, the organisation brings together over 200 members from 34 countries, who select the finalists for awards. By being nominated, the finalists in turn earn life membership in the organisation. Its working motto is that people who are at the top in their field are able to create even more and achieve better results through collaboration with experts from other fields.

Over the past years, award recipients have included a number of innovators who have left a stamp on the last decade, such as Craig Venter (the human genome), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Tim Berners Lee (World Wide Web), Linus Torvalds (Linux), Michael Graetzel (solar cells), Al Gore (climate changes) and Burt Rutan (SpaceshipOne). Some of the corporations to receive the awards are Genentech, Google, Sony, IBM, Apple, Space-X and the Weizman Institute.

At last year's iGEM competition in synthetic biology, the Slovenian team prepared a completely new type of bionanomaterial, prepared in bacteria. The basic building blocks were designed to self-assemble into either a network or into particles a few tens of nanometres across. The team also presented the practical use of the materials for removing viruses and the prepared materials also show great potential with their possible uses in medicine delivery, catalysis, molecule separation, as a framework for assembling nanoscale electronic circuits, in the preparation of materials with special properties, etc. The project design and research work were mentored and carried out at the National Institute of Chemistry.

Last year, the award for biotechnology went to the Alnylam company, which holds the key patents for interfering RNA technology, which also earned the Nobel Prize in 2006 and is promising a breakthrough in the treatment of many diseases.

The award recipients will be announced on 25 June this year at the gala ceremony in the Time & Life building, New York, also attended by the Slovenian team leader Dr Roman Jerala from the National Institute of Chemistry. In 2002, the only Slovenian until now to find a place among the WTA finalists in the arts category was Marko Peljhan with his Atol project.
