Carbohydrates, Biofuels and Energy by Processing of Microalgae Biomass

Content description of the project

Microalgae are an attractive alternative feedstock for fossil fuel replacements owing to their abundance in high-added value compounds and easy cultivation. Among these, polysaccharides production, in particular starch, is of high importance due to its production up to 50% of the dry biomass. Once purified, starch has a wide range of applications in many industrial sectors, for instance biofuel production. However, the downstream processes applied are still the main bottleneck of this process. Hence, this projects aims at developing a more efficient, cost-effective and sustainable protocol for the isolation of starch from microalgae and use it in bioethanol production.
