CENTER FOR DEVELOPMENT, DEMONSTRATION AND TRAINING FOR CARBON-FREE TECHNOLOGIES (DUBT)
Center for Development, Demonstration and Training of Carbon-Free Technologies will be established to ensure the development of technologies for the green transition. With the green transition, Slovenia and Europe will more easily and quickly become climate neutral and energy independent. At the same time, this will be an important contribution to the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Slovenia by at least 40% by 2030, as well as a contribution to the fight against global warming. In the European Cohesion Policy Program 2021-2027, the state defined the Center for Carbon-Free Technologies as an operation of strategic importance.
Slovenian knowledge in the field of developing battery and hydrogen technologies is top-notch and enables the introduction of new technologies and processes and the production of new products in this field. Slovenia, led by the Institute of Chemistry in the EU, also leads the S3 partnership in the framework of industrial modernization with the topic Advanced materials for batteries for use in mobility and stationary energy storage. The problem is that the proposed technological solutions, although they are at the very top of the world, are currently at a low level of technological development. The establishment of the proposed DUBT Center will enable research and innovation at higher levels of technological development, as well as a faster transfer of research and development of advanced materials to industry and everyday life.
Main Purpose of DUBT
DUBT aims to bridge the gap between the development of advanced zero-carbon technologies and their industrial application. By providing state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for research, development, and training, the center will accelerate the transfer of knowledge from research units to industry, facilitating the commercialization of innovative solutions.
A bridge to accelerate the transfer of research knowledge to industry
The center will house two laboratories: The Laboratory for Battery Development, Preparation, and Testing, and the Laboratory for Reaction Engineering of Carbon Dioxide and Hydrogen Conversions. These labs will support the rapid testing and implementation of innovative battery materials and hydrogen technologies, meeting the needs of both domestic and international industries.

Funding and Project Value
The project, led by the National Institute of Chemistry and co-financed by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport, represents an estimated €30 million investment. The majority of this funding, between €20 and €25 million, will be allocated for demonstration and training equipment.
What will be DUBT's Contribution
DUBT will enhance scientific research and education in zero-carbon technologies, contributing to economic progress and improving the quality of life in Slovenia. The center will drive the development of advanced materials, technologies, and services, boosting investments, growth, and industrial development.
The importance of the Center for the Greater Region
DUBT will provide Slovenia and its neighbouring regions with cutting-edge research equipment, positioning the area as a leader in zero-carbon technology innovation in Europe. This will attract new European partners, increase industrial collaboration, and support regional and international development. Through its advanced infrastructure and strategic partnerships, the center will play a crucial role in the green transition, benefiting both the local and broader European community.
The establishment of the DUBT Center project is financed by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation from the Just Transition Fund.
