Detailed Program

12.30: ORGANIC AND FLEXIBLE, doc. dr. Nadiia Pastukhova

Lecture, Large Lecture Hall, 1st floor

Abstract: The development of organic semiconductors (OS) opens a new perspective and possibilities for novel device architectures including flexible and wearable electronics. One of the key parameters is the charge carriers' mobility. In OSs, it is affected by many factors, including molecular stacking, chemical impurities, temperature, pressure, electric field, and charge carrier density. These factors can affect the structural or energetic disorder. To overcome limitations, new polymers that extend the π-conjugation to two dimensions were developed. The two-dimensional network structure provides a high degree of structural stability and tunability of properties, while the organic molecules can be engineered to exhibit specific chemical and physical properties such as large surface area, pore size, and electronic properties. I will present our recent research, where quasi-2D polyacetylene (q2DPA) demonstrates high electron mobility along the direction of the layer, measured by the lateral time-of-flight photoconductivity (TOF) method.

Introduction to the lecture will be held by Nataša Zabukovec Logar.

Lecture will be held in English.

13.00: IT’S ALL ABOUT (STRUCTURAL) DETAILS, izr. prof. dr. Marjetka Podobnik

Lecture, Large Lecture Hall, 1st floor

Abstract: The structure of a protein forms the basis for its interaction with other molecules and thus determines its function. It is not only fascinating to see how the spatial distribution of certain atoms affects biological processes, but also how small changes in structural details can lead to dramatic changes in protein function. Such tricks of nature have been successfully utilised by the intracellular pathogenic bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, which causes one of the most serious food-borne diseases, listeriosis. L. monocytogenes possesses three major virulence factors, broad-range phospholipase C (PC-PLC), phosphatidyl-inositol-specific phospholipase (PI-PLC), and the pore-forming toxin listeriolysin O (LLO), which enable the bacterium to spread within the host by disrupting cell membranes. I will present the results of our recent study showing how the unique structural features of L. monocytogenes PC-PLC enable self-regulation of its enzymatic activity and positive synergy with LLO.
