The CCEdit project team led by prof. dr. Roman Jerala is the winner of AmCham Slovenia competition for the best business practice Best of the Best 2021.

In 2019, the group filed a patent application to improve the CRISPR method, which represents one of the most important technological breakthroughs in the field of life sciences in recent years. Based on this improvement, prof. dr. Roman Jerala applied for and acquired the ERC Proof-of-Concept project called CCEdit, which allows for continuation of the development and demonstration of technology for health and other biotechnological purposes.

The project, which began in February 2020, has a strong mission. In addition to improving technology for gene editing and transfer to commercial use, the aim is to establish an international business and development relationship with foreign organizations. By connecting with global biotechnology centers and pharmaceutical companies, the project can achieve greater visibility and better opportunities to break into the market, while at the same time enriching the entire Slovenian biotechnical Start-up sector with an example of good cooperation practice. Slovenian researchers are achieving globally competitive achievements in the field of life sciences. However, most of this research, despite its economic and social potential, is not experiencing further development, so we are also deprived of advanced cell and gene therapies that could become available to our patients.

The aim of the project is to overcome the lack of key domestic development resources and knowledge with resources from foreign biotechnology centers. In this way, we can use limited resources to make progress in the commercialization of biotechnological and medical innovations, thus encouraging decision-makers, researchers and other actors to participate more actively in the development of domestic industry.
