Synthesis of ellagic acid from ethyl gallate using hydroxides and deep eutectic solvents

Society is becoming increasingly conscious of how important a healthy lifestyle is and the role that natural plant products play in it. One such important natural compound is ellagic acid (EA) – a polyphenolic compound found in various fruits, vegetables, and other plant sources. EA has antioxidant, anti-mutagenic, anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.

Our invention describes a novel process for the efficient synthesis of this bioactive polyphenolic compound from gallic acid esters, such as methyl gallate, ethyl gallate, and propyl gallate. Our production method uses a combination of an alkaline solution, eutectic solvents, and a gas mixture.

The main benefits of the method we have developed include a high yield and purity – even on larger scales, where a 61.8% yield is still maintained. Furthermore, the reaction protocols are simple, ensuring both the accessibility and reproducibility of the newly developed approach.
