Ljubljana,
Bistable switches are fundamental elements for information management and storage in electronic devices, such as for example memory sticks. Scientists first incorporated genetic switches into bacterial cells over a decade ago, but the capacity of those switches was limited to a few specific examples. Researchers from the Department of Biotechnology of the National Institute of Chemistry and from the Centre of excellence EN-FIST now succeeded in constructing genetic switches, which can, in principle, be designed in thousands of variations.

We cannot imagine our life without electronic digital computers, which perform many different tasks from processing text to the control of devices from cars to mobile phones. Those tasks are performed by electronic…

Proteins perform the most complex tasks in living organisms and are widely employed in medicine, biotechnology, chemistry and other areas. Designing of new, de novo protein structures is still very challenging since the large number of cooperative and long-range interactions determine the protein fold. However the ability of preparing new and smart polypeptide structures is of exceptional scientific and technological potential.

Due to an unfeasible number of dynamical degrees of freedom or a lack of knowledge about the actual microscopic dynamics an exact deterministic description of complex dynamical systems is often not possible. Therefore, one is forced to an effective stochastic description. Traditionally it is assumed that the noise follows Gaussian statistics, which is based on the central limit theorem.
