Odsek za katalizo in reakcijsko inženirstvo je prvenstveno posvečen kemijskemu (procesnemu) inženirstvu, načrtovanju in izgradnji reaktorjev ter obratovalnih enot, pa tudi več-nivojskemu procesnemu modeliranju. Tematika odseka se nanaša predvsem na pretvorbo ogljikovega dioksida in zemeljskega plina, tehnologije vodika ter gorivne celice, vrednotenje biomase za pripravo bio-osnovanih snovi in procese v (bio)farmacevtiki.
