Preparation and Modification of High-Entropy Alloys for Electrochemical Water Splitting

ARIS NOO Fundamental project

Project description

This research project focuses on the development of advanced electrocatalysts for water splitting based on commercial alloys or high-entropy alloys (HEAs). The development includes alloy preparation and various surface modifications aimed at increasing the specific surface area and altering composition and structure to enhance electrocatalytic properties.

The main challenges in water electrolysis are high overpotentials and catalyst stability. Commercially available materials often rely on rare and expensive metals such as iridium and platinum, limiting their widespread use. The goal of this project is to develop cost-effective and sustainable noble-metal-free catalysts that enable efficient and stable electrochemical production of hydrogen and oxygen.

The project will explore different fabrication methods for initial alloys and various post-processing techniques, including electrochemical and thermal treatments. We will investigate the impact of synthesis parameters on the final catalytic properties, with a special focus on material analysis at different preparation stages at identical locations. This approach will provide key insights into morphological and chemical changes at macro, micro, and nano levels. A strong emphasis will also be placed on the development of new research methodologies to ensure the highest transparency of results and a comprehensive understanding of the critical parameters influencing catalyst activity and stability.

To optimize processes, the project will incorporate machine learning, enabling faster analysis of experimental data and predictive modeling of optimal catalyst compositions. The acquired knowledge will contribute to the development of novel materials for sustainable hydrogen production and facilitate industrial applications without reliance on noble metals.
